Y'all,
While some parts of the party's old web site are archived at The Wayback Machine, there's a certain discontinuity between the "2006" BTP and the "2008" BTP.
I've written a brief history up through the end of 2007, entirely from my own perspective, available here.
Like I said, that is just MY perspective. I hope that those of you who have been involved with the party at any time since its founding will chip in here in comments with your own recollections, or links to those recollections elsewhere.

Tom, could you please make a copy of the membership as of today, so we can avoid losing it all again? Is there any archive of the old membership data?

The original loss was my bad -- I had made a backup, but then had had a hard drive go bad and hadn't made one SINCE, so the data was just lost.
These days, I'm making regular backups AND burning them to CD so that a lost hard drive doesn't mean a lost backup. Matter of fact, I just made one today. I may also look into some of those online backup services and subscribe to one if they're not too expensive.
